I was ten years old when Princess Zahara adopted me and for the next eight years of my life I lived in the palace with the royal family of Kasem. Prince Aroosh respected his wife’s choice to take me as her son and treated me with equal respect and dignity as he did all his children. I lived in the same rooms that they did, attended the same events, had the same teachers and went to the same schools, ate at the same table and was offered the same opportunities.

My stepfather showed a lot of concern for my well-being, more so than for his other sons and I knew it was because I was different. Living mostly indoors had changed my appearance greatly. I had become paler as I lost my desert tan, my hair had lightened and my blue eyes had become clearer as well. I looked more American than Kasemian by then and Aroosh feared that outside the palace people would discriminate against me for looking different than they did.

I harbored no such fears. My stepmother reminded me often over the years that I should be proud of who I was and never forget where I came from because she would never forget the blond boy that God had brought out of the desert to Hanami to become the son she had prayed so many years for. I agreed with her. I thanked God every day for bringing me to the city and I also swore that I would never forget what the rebels did to my family. I promised myself that one day when I was old enough I would find the man who ordered the attack on my village and rip out his throat just as I had the man who shot my sister and mother.

To ensure that I was properly prepared, I showed interest in military training at an early age. This pleased the prince to no end. Having been a military trained man himself, it had grieved him that none of his sons had yet shown the interest. He indulged my interest greatly with hunting trips where I learned to use a variety of firearms and of course, knives. When I turned eighteen, I joined the Kasem National Guard and even spent a few years abroad receiving combat training with the British Army in the Scottish mountains.

I returned to Hanami when I was twenty-two years old with the rank of army lieutenant and though it had frightened Zahara to see me leave at first, she was the proudest woman in Kasem. Prince Aroosh was astonished and pleased as well. He made me commander of the royal desert patrols.

On the night of the rank ceremony, he pulled me aside and told me of his only concern.

“Wolfgang, I am afraid that you will take this position as an opportunity to scour the desert for the rebels who attacked your village those many years ago.” My lack of a reply told him everything that he needed to know so he chose to just continue.
